What’s in This Year: Plaid

If you have been in the fashion world (as in, if you have actually cared about what you wear) for any length of time, then you are no doubt aware of the fact that every so often, you just have to go a little bit wild with it. In this case, the most modern trend is once again to go a little bit retro. If you can remember back to the 70s, a lot of visual texture was prized by both men and women, who loved to show off how active they were. Fast forward to the modern world, and the plaids of yesteryear are still long gone.

You would have to be crazy to go back to the olive greens and nasty sewer browns that made those days so forgettable in an unforgettable (think train wreck) kind of way. In this day and age, brighter colors are finally making a comeback after several years of just laying in the background hoping to get noticed. If you are going to bedeck yourself in plaids, you have got to have a solid understanding of complementary colors andhow to arrange them together for maximum effect. When they are too close together, it starts to look a little bit too camouflagey. But when you have them too far apart, they tend to make you look too out there.

The idea is to have your outfit simmer a little bit, and not seem as if it’s a nuclear reactor just exploding constantly. There is a sort of visual tension that your outfit has got to create, if you want it to be suitably fabulous and get you noticed in a good way. Just don’t go too crazy with plaid.
