In fashion circles, it is a well known fact that there is a degree of media influence over what “the people” are going to be wearing next week, next month and even next year. While there are always the avant garde (read: stuck up and budgeted higher than 99% of the population is) who set certain tones and have their own visions of what makes a great outfit, most people out there pay a whole lot more attention to what celebrities are wearing and doing than to what has waltzed down the catwalk most recently in this show or that.
Of course, for all of the fame and fortune that celebrities bring to bear, they are just people like the rest of us. They have their own insecurities, their own foibles and they are just as sensitive to the current zeitgeist as everybody else is today. If you think that celebrities and their fashions are not informed by the same fashion winds that puff into everybody’s sails, you are absolutely dreaming. However, the balance between what makes celebrities enjoy their outfits and what makes everybody else want something different today than yesterday is a subtle interplay to say the least.
When it comes to what the big stars are wearing right now, there are going to be fads, there are going to be reinforcements of classical rules, and then there are going to be personal statements which may be parodied but that can never truly be reproduced as they began. For celebrity fashions, the world of what is and was informs the world of what fills their closets. For the rest of us, on the other hand, there is a lot of influence from them.
